Overview

Health Science II includes an extended lab experience at a clinical site designed to provide students the opportunity to earn CNA certification, assume the role of nurse assistant, and practice technical skills previously learned in the classroom. It prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for providing basic care in extended care facilities, hospitals, and home health agencies under the direction of licensed nurses. This program also prepares students for admission into a postsecondary program.  The Pharmacy Technician certification is completed outside of class time.

Next Steps

Upon completion of the Health Science program, students are prepared for multiple pathways in healthcare, including direct employment in long-term care facilities with their CNA and Dementia Care certifications, or further study in 2- and 4-year college programs such as nursing, imaging, or respiratory therapy. With the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential students can also qualify for immediate roles in doctors’ offices, outpatient clinics, and specialty practices, where they perform both administrative and clinical duties such as scheduling, assisting with exams, running lab tests, and maintaining patient records. Together, these credentials give graduates the flexibility to enter the workforce, continue higher education, pursue additional certifications, or advance through military service, all while building a strong foundation for a career in healthcare.

Student Evaluation

After the completion of two years in the program, students are evaluated on technical and essential skills. The Technical Skills Evaluation documents the Health Science skills learned. The Essential Skills Evaluation documents the workplace skills all WCC students learn. The documents were developed by WCC teachers, in cooperation with business partners and industry advisory committees, and are updated each year.
