Overview
The Education Professions Capstone provides an extended opportunity for field experience through placement in local elementary schools. Students spend three days each week applying concepts that have been presented throughout the pathway. Students have the opportunity to explore literacy development through children’s literature; gain a deeper understanding of inclusive teaching techniques along with policies, theories, and laws related to special education; practice in-depth planning, writing, and implementation of developmentally-appropriate lesson plans; apply safety and ethical principles when working with children; and investigate licensing requirements related to careers in education. Students complete a portfolio project to document their experiences in the classroom.
Next Steps
Upon completing the Education Professions program, students are well-prepared to continue their studies in 2- or 4-year degree programs in education and related fields. Many choose to pursue degrees in elementary or secondary education, or special education. Others explore fields such as counseling, child development, or educational leadership. Graduates also have opportunities to enter the workforce in early learning centers, after-school programs, or as paraprofessionals in schools, gaining valuable experience while continuing their education. Some students may also explore related career pathways in human services and community programs.
